Careers 101
Careers 101 is a three hour class taught by the Career Services department. Classes are offered on Fridays from 1:00 - 4:00 p.m. in room 262C (behind the computer lab). RSVP is required. The curriculum includes use of the DISCOVER career exploration system, use of UTPB's College Central Network, students will take the Myers Briggs typology inventory and hear sessions on interviewing, resume/cover letter preparation and job hunting strategies. Many of our professors offer extra credit for attending these seminars, so check with your instructor prior to enrolling. Classes can also be customized one on one to fit the needs of the individual. There is NO cost and sessions are open to current UTPB students and alumni.

Fall On-Campus Recruiting Schedule
Enterprise Rent-a-Car, October 28, 2009, 10:00 a.m. to 12 noon. Enterprise will be on campus recruiting for management trainees and candidates for their internship program. Internship candidates must have at least 60 college credit hours and management trainee candidates can be from any discipline but must be an alumni, December 09 or May 10 candidate for graduation. Weidner Apartment Homes, October 6, 2009, 9 a.m. to 12 noon. Weidner will be on campus recruting for candidates for their MIT (manager in training program) and their paid internship program. Fall Events
Law School Admissions Seminar, September 24, 2009, Mac Boring room, noon-1 p.m. Sara Kate Billingsley with the law firm of Todd, Barron, Thomason & Hudman will discuss the LSAT, admissions procedures to law school and traditional and non-traditional occupational pathways within the field of law. Sara Kate is a UTPB alumni and will be sharing some of her experiences during her years as a practicing attorney. This seminar is open to the general public (including all UTPB students) and refreshments will be served and door prizes will be given away.
UTPB Careers Majors Fair, October 2, 2009, UTPB Multipurpose room (2nd floor Mesa building) 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 pm. This event is open to all UTPB undeclared majors, students receiving the Rising to the Challenge scholarships and invited area high school students. Students will have the opportunity to hear career practitioners working in arts & sciences, business and education from 11-12 and everyone will be treated with hamburgers and drinks from 12-1. Door prizes will also be awarded.
Careers in Public Accounting, October 8, 2009, Mac Boring room, noon-1 p.m. J.D. Faircloth with the accounting firm of Johnson Miller & Company C.P.A.’s will be the guest speaker. This is a must attend seminar if you are an undeclared major considering a career in accounting or an Accounting major considering public accounting as a career. Topics to be covered include: current requirements to sit for the C.P.A. exam in the state of Texas, opportunities in public accounting, ethical issues in accounting and the evolution of information technology in accounting. Career pathways outside of public accounting will also be discussed. This seminar is open to the general public (including all UTPB students) and refreshments will be served and door prizes will be given away.
Dress for Success, October 15, 2009, Mac Boring room, noon-1 p.m. Career Center Director Tony Love and SIFE vice-president Edith Lopez will co-host a seminar designed to show you how to dress for the first job interview. UTPB students will model business attire provided by Dillard's and The Express store. Free food and drinks will be served and door prizes awarded. This seminar is open to the general public and all UTPB students.
Work 101, November 5, 2009, Mac Boring room, noon-1 p.m. Moderator: Janene Binnion, First National Bank of Midland . Your first 90 days on the job are critical to jump starting your professional career. Our moderator will discuss professionalism at work, critical thinking, work place conduct, technology in the workplace, customer service, written communication, confidentiality, dress, protocol for meetings, getting along with your supervisor and burning bridges. Free food and drinks will be served. Open to the general public and all UTPB students.
Mentors in the Work Place, November 19, 2009, Mac Boring Room, noon-1 p.m. Moderator: Valorie Rogers, Program Coordinator, JBS Public Leadership Institute. Transitioning into your first professional job can be stressful and intimidating. Our program moderator will show you how to choose a work mentor and how the mentor-mentee relationship can blossom your career. Among other things, mentors can provide emotional support, insights into the company culture, assistance in developing networks, job training, tips on time management and advice on negotiating problematic coworker relationships. Seminar is open to all UTPB students and the general public. Free food and drinks will be provided.
Spring 2010 Events
Acing Your First Interview, January 28, 2010, 12 noon to 1:15 p.m., UTPB Mac Boring room. Moderator: Ryan Fuller, CINTAS Corporation. How do you prepare for an win the job of your dreams? What are employers looking for? What subtle things can you do to ruinyour chances of being extended an offer? CINTAS H.R. generalist Ryan Fuller will lead you through the steps of conducting a successful interview. Lunch will be provided.
Grad School: Is it Right for You? February 11, 2010, 12 noon to 1 p.m. UTPB Mac Boring room. UTPB Interim Assistant Vice President for Graduate Studies and Research Dr. Karen Smith will guide you through important grad school considerations including deadlines, selection criteria, applications, the GRE/GMAT/TOEFL, g.p.a.'s, aceptance of non-degree seeking students, costs and UTPB programs of study. Opportunities for grad assistantships and scholarships will also be discussed. Also, career implications of a grad school education will be noted and UTPB grad students will be on hand to relate their "grad school experience." The UTPB Career Services department will provide lunch for all attendees.
Your Guide to Working Overseas, March 4, 2010, noon to 1 p.m. Learn how to do your homework before accepting an offer to work overseas. Discussions will revolve around political and safety issues, contract negotiations, tax consequences and passport/VISA considerations. A free lunch will be provided.
How to Prepare an Effective Resume, March 25, 2010, noon to 1 p.m. Learn how quantitative statements can enhance your resume. Teacher resumes will also be discussed for education students along with cover letters and thank you letters. A free lunch will be provided to all students in attendance.
UTPB Spring Job Fair, April 1, 2010 , noon to 4 p.m., UTPB gym. Dress for success and bring plenty of resumes, as over 55 employers are expected to be on hand for this event.
