About BIT Program
The Purpose of Behavioral Intervention Team:
The purpose of the BIT is to receive referrals for students whose behavior appears stressed and goes beyond a normal behavior. The BIT will evaluate the student and the circumstances and will determine the appropriate action to be taken. The goal of the team is to maintain a healthy and safe environment for the UTPB campus community.
Types of activities that should be reported:
Students who exhibit one ore more of the following characteristics:
- Bizarre or strange behavior
- Deterioration in personal appearance
- References to harming self or others
- Irritable, abrasive or aggressive behavior
- Crying and or persistent sadness, nervousness, impaired speech
- Self-injurious behavior
- Suicidal thought or attempt
- Behavior that threatens or endangers others
- Possession of a weapon
- Erratic or disruptive behavior
- Involuntary transportation to the hospital for alcohol or drug use/abuse
If you have concerns about the students, but not observed disruptive behavior, please explain your concerns.
When to Refer Students to the BIT
- When the particular behaviors are observed and concern arises.
- They may also be referred to the University Counseling Center.
- Emergencies that require immediate intervention should be referred to the UTPB Police.
- The BIT plays secondary motion to urgent circumstances. UTPB Police should be the first point of contact.
- The BIT does not replace referrals to the Counseling Center or the Early Alert System, which handle situations involving less severe situations.
Referral
If you notice or are notified of a person on campus who may be harmful or unsafe, please make a referral to the BIT.
The referral process:
- UTPB established a telephone hot line that will be answered by the Dean of Students during normal hours and will be answered by the Police dispatch during hours when Dean is not available.Referral may also be made through Early Alert System online by those who have access to this system. Students, faculty and staff of the university community will be able to phone in referrals for behavior that is indicative of extreme distress and disturbance.
