Career Decision Making Steps

 

  • Know what your interests, values, and abilities are (ABSOLUTELY CRITICAL)!! Come to the PASS Office and take the Self-Directed Search and/or click on this link and do the MAPP . The school code is: utpb-pass
  •  Search for those occupations that best fit your interests, values, and abilities.
  • Set your priorities (location, salary, benefits, working conditions, etc) and read available information on these occupations to determine nature of work, working conditions, occupational outlook, educational/experiential preparation needed, etc
  • Make a list of those occupations that you feel are worth pursuing further.
  • Talk with people who are actually employed in the occupations you are interested in. If possible, shadow that person for an agreed upon period of time.
  • You should attempt to gain first-hand experience in work settings of interest via volunteer work, part-time or summer employment, internships, co-ops, etc.
  • Make your career decision.
  • Develop your academic degree plan to fit your career decision.
  • Take Action: Stay Focused on your plan.
